The Best Plumbing 101 Tip

Plumbers Putty - The Best Plumbing 101 Tip

Plumber's putty is a very versatile, durable, and easily pliable grey substance. It is often used by plumbers to establish a seal that's watertight between sinks and faucets or drains. It is found in the toolboxes of nearly all plumbers, and that's exactly why it's known as plumber's putty. One of the great things about this product is that it actually stays pliable and soft for quite a long time after it is applied on a surface. This means that it is easy removable if you only want to seal a pipe joint temporarily. The material is very easy to apply. It doesn't require any special training or skills to apply any amount of this product to the surface you are working with. That makes it the easiest plumbing product for any home owner to keep on hand.
You can buy different brands of this product in almost any hardware store. It is even available in department stores and some larger grocery stores. The price for a standard-sized bucket, which holds enough material for at least a dozen appliances, can range from one dollar to around 4 or 5 dollar for a specialised product, such as granite-safe putty. Every home should have a package of this product among its home maintenance supplies just in case a leak appears. Since it's very low-priced and lasts for several years, you can store it in your basement, workroom, or under the kitchen sink until you're ready to use it. Just make sure you keep the container firmly closed after each use so the clay doesn't get exposed to the air too long. Although it will stay soft and pliable for a very long time, it can dry out if you leave the package open for a very long time.
Plumber's putty is frequently applied at the base of a faucet or drain before installing it. Since it does not dry or harden quickly, any leftover putty that oozes out from between the seal can easily be put back into the products container. Having a product that is easy to remove is important for the overall look of your installed faucet or other fixture. You certainly wouldn't want visible patches of dried putty or any other sealant ruining the looks of your drain, faucet or bath. You won't have to worry about staining or sticking as long as you clean any extra product right away.
Plumber's putty is a terrific product, but it is not suitable for every situation. The fact that it does not dry and harden also makes it a poor choice for any piping or sealing that will be under pressure. Especially high water pressure can damage and break the seal and cause the pipes or other joined objects to break loose and cause water damage. In other words, this putty makes an ideal seal that's watertight, but it cannot connect two pipes or other fixtures together. There are other plumbing products, such as teflon tape that are made for that particular purpose.

Granite Countertop installation problems and solutions

"Trapped Appliances, Composite sinks aka Granite Sinks and Milled backsplash"

Trapped Dishwashers
Trapped dishwashers happen when flooring is installed "up to" cabinet bases, as opposed to having the cabinets set on top of the finished floor. An alternative is to use inexpensive plywood to raise the cabinets up to the height of the finished floor. This is good for new installations but too late if your cabinets are already installed on the sub floor.

We get this call about once a quarter. It's not an everyday problem. It is frequent enough to warrant awareness. Unfortunately the solution is always expensive. You have to sacrifice the counter or the floor in order to get the dishwasher out. After replacing the dishwasher you usually still have the same problem. Living in fear of appliance failure is not an easy feeling. Unless the cabinets are set at the same elevation as the finished floor this is a distinct possibility.

When your dishwasher fails, you will suffer a 0 or more repair or replace cost just for the dishwasher. The additional costs of flooring or countertop replacement can be avoided with proper planning. It's like adding salt to the wound in that to correct the problem permanently, you have to tear the kitchen apart. Prevent this by insisting that the cabinets are at the same elevation as the finished floor.

Composite-Granite Sinks
Granite or composite sinks such as Blanco and Swan sinks require silicone instead
of plumbers putty to mount the strainer or other fixtures to the sink or the sink to the stone. The sinks can and do stain from Plumbers putty. The manufacturers themselves
will tell you not to use plumbers putty to mount the strainer/garbage disposer.

Some plumbers will use plumbers putty to mount sprayers, instant-hots and other
assorted deck mounted items. This will stain the stone. The answer is silicone.

Milled Backsplash
Customers that want thin (2 centimeter) backsplash should select thin stone. Cutting 3 centimeter stone into 2 centimeter is risky and time consuming and expensive. Our stone is not priced to include thin milling. The reason why marbles come in 2 centimeter and 3 centimeter is that it's possible. The reason why most granite species are 3 centimeter thick is because if cut into 2 centimeter slabs, the percentage that break under its own weight is too high for the quarry to remain profitable. If the quarry is not willing to make it in 2 centimeter, why would we, or you, or your customer, want to take the risk?

Solutions:
1) Select a 2 centimeter stone instead of 3 centimeter. Understand the limitations of the material. Not all stone can be milled thin without breaking.
2) Cut and remove the drywall to recess the backsplash, by the thickness of the drywall.
3) Select a sink and faucet combination that actually fits the cabinet as opposed to cramming more items then actually fit the space.
4) Be honest with your self. If your bathroom is not big enough to accept a cabinet that is deep enough to allow the sink + faucet + the backsplash at the full thickness of the slab you choose. You may have to settle for a smaller sink bowl than you might have liked.
5) A tile backsplash instead of a solid piece of stone backsplash may match the rest of the bathroom better and solve the clearance problems?

Where to Place Knobs on a Cabinet

Where to Place Knobs on a Cabinet

Samsung Galaxy

Once you decide to change out cabinet hardware you might find the style you pick won't look that great if you try and replace the knobs in the same spots that the old ones were in. Well what to do? You certainly don't want to go back to the same boring old hardware. Instead you need a better understanding of your options for where to place knobs on a cabinet.

The most obvious place to put a knob will be on a side opposite a hinge. The leverage allows you to open the door with almost no effort. This is great for those that might have a disability limiting their grip strength. The only exception to this rule is if you have roll out bottom cabinets, you know, the giant drawer types. Those you'll want to install the knobs centered on the cabinet to keep it from binding up on either side.

Well that gives you a rough idea of where to put the knobs but you probably need something a little bit more exact. Unfortunately there's no magic formula for where to place knobs on a cabinet. It's all going to come down to how the cabinets are designed and the size and shape of them and your kitchen.

There's a trick you can use to figure out where to place the knobs without just randomly drilling a bunch of holes into the cabinet face and hoping for the best. Head out to the hardware store and pick up a small tub of plumber's putty. Plumbers putty is a non-hardening compound that's slightly tacky. You can pull off little dollops of it then use it to just stick the knobs to the cabinet.

Here's what you'll do.

Open up the tub of Plumber's putty.

Pinch off a piece of putty about the size of the tip of your thumb.

Roll it into a ball.

Take the cabinet hardware and press the putty onto the back of it. Now you can just stick the knob onto the cabinet face wherever you think it will look right. Repeat this for a couple of the doors so you can get an overall feel for how the knobs will look sitting in a row. You can reposition the knobs just by popping them off the cabinet face and sticking them back on in a new spot.

Once you've figured out the right look for the cabinet you'll need to measure the knob offsets from the bottom and side edge of the cabinets. You can then use those measurements as a template for knob placement. Mark the offsets on each of the cabinets and double check to make sure they aren't slanting up or down.

The last thing to do is attach the hardware. Just drill the holes in the cabinet and slide a bolt through the hole and tighten the knobs down onto it. It's all a pretty simple job. Where to place knobs on a cabinet is a completely personal choice. You'll know what looks right once you get the knobs in position.

What is Injection Waterproofing?

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

Injection waterproofing is often used to fill and seal cracks and crevices. The material is most often made from a polyurethane compound. The compound is lightweight and expands up to twice its original size when applied to a surface. Many non-toxic and environmentally safe products are available at home improvement stores nationwide. Injection waterproofing is used mainly in foundation crack repairs.

In most foundation cracks, a polyurethane injection can seal the opening. In some smaller cracks it may be apparent that a sealant was used because it may be difficult to evenly inject the compound. Single caulking style cartridges and the dual side-by-side cartridge systems are the types of injection waterproofing compounds available for retail purchase. Both of these are manually injected and easy to pump.

When using an injection waterproofing method, it is important to keep the area dry. Temporarily block any flowing water to the area, and clean and dry the area as needed. Experts say that in the case of water flowing through a hole, you can temporarily caulk the hole with candle wax, modeling clay or plumbers' putty. If the cracks are in narrow or hard-to-reach places, you can use a flexible hose attached to the injector nozzle.

Whatever waterproofing system your leakage problem requires, be sure to do your research. If you choose to make this a do-it-yourself project, make sure you know where your leaks are coming from and the proper method to repair them. When purchasing waterproofing materials you should make sure you are buying the appropriate product for your needs. The National Association of Waterproofing and Structural Repair Contractors (NAWSRC) has tons of information on waterproofing. Whether or not you decide to hire a contractor, this organization can help you from beginning to end.
